Friday,
January 7, 2005 - The San Francisco WORLD'S FAIR of 1915 will came alive Friday, January
7th at Viking Hall in Santa Cruz. Valhalla Scandinavian's monthly community
program featured Dr. James Kaplan, researcher and professor from Minnesota
State University at Moorhead. The emphasis was on the Swedish Pavilion
at the Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915. The Palace of
Fine Arts in San Francisco is the only remaining building of this huge
Worlds Fair that completely covered the Marina District Members and
friends brought memorabilia from the fair. Two women who attended the
1915 fair were in attendance. There was also be a short video of the
actual dolls made in Stockholm especially for the pavilion. They were
bought by the Hearsts and are now in Phoebe Apperson Hearst Museum on
the UC Berkeley campus in Kroeber Hall Library at the University of
California in Berkeley. Dr. Jim Kaplan has done research on the history
of the Swedish Pavilion and told its story. He has studied at the Pavilion
at the Royal Library in Stockholm, the Stockholm Municipal Archives
and the National Archives of Sweden, as well as the remarkable collection
at the archives of the Swedish American Hall in San Francisco. He has
found information about the life of the director of the Pavilion, Lieutenant
Richard Bernstrom,---a dramatic and hitherto unknown story of family
turmoil, glorious triumph and a tragic death. This Pavilion was
the first time that the Swedish government worked together with Swedish
Americans on a Worlds Fair Pavilion, and so it marks a sort of reconciliation
between the "black sheep emigrants" and their home country.
The planning, building and running of the Pavilion is a remarkable story
of courage, hard work, cooperation and fellowship. This successful Pavilion
played a dual role of affirming the value of the Swedish Americans to
the American mainstream and showed the homeland that they were worthy
people despite their emigration.

- Friday, February 4, 2005 - Valhalla Scandinavians Learn
About Louden Nelson
Franklin Marshall, director of the Children's Museum
in Santa Cruz, spoke at
Valhalla Scandinavians February program. His topic was "Nelson
Louden", the
son of slaves and owned by a Mr. Nelson in the south. It is a
not-so-well-known fact that there were Swedish plantation owners in
the
Southern United
States. It is thought that Nelson Louden's master
was Swedish.
Mr. Marshall presented his research about Nelson Louden, the freed
slave who
appreciated education, though he had none, so willed his estate to the
Santa
Cruz City Schools which was in financial straights at the time. Today
the
former school turned Community Center is known as Nelson Loudon Center.
Presenting, dressed in tophat and tails, the dress of the 1850s, Mr.
Marshall, a black man has been the sole researcher about Mr. Louden.
It is
known
that when the master of the plantation died, his son, who had a secret
friendship
with Nelson, bargained to receive Nelson Louden in the estate settlement.
Then he promised freedom to this young slave boy if he would go to California
with him and work the gold mines along the way and in California. The
two men
worked side-by-side and then their lives were separated as the freed
Nelson
went to Santa Cruz. Louden Nelson made his 'fortune' in those mines.
Cultural Program Leader, Barbara Olson, introduced Mr. Marshall, who
introduced the book he has written about Nelson Louden and is illustrated
by his
wife.
The proceeds have been used to increase educational needs in Santa Cruz.
Mr. Marshall, originally from Tennessee, was invited to the South this
year to
be included in activities for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. He is also
collecting cards made by children in Santa Cruz and will be a part of
a
delegation
taking assistance to the people of the Tsunami disaster including the
cards from
children to children.

Friday, April 1 - "The King's Orphan"
- the exhibition has left San Francisco now,
but is the story of the ostensibly illegitimate son of a Swedish
king. The "Orphan King" was well-educated in Sweden and eventually
became an artist.
He traveled Europe, South America, Central America,
Mexico and into California, then New York. He kept a precise diary of
his life including drawings of the places he visited. You'll
see places in our area in the collection.
Even the story about how these pictures are now owned by the California
Pioneers is interesting in itself.

Norway's Independence - Norway's Constitution Day
(May 17, 1814) marks the end of the approximately 300 year Danish
rule of Norway, and Norway came under Swedish rule as a result of
the Napoleonic Wars. Swedish rule was more relaxed; Norway had its
own constitution and its own flag, and the Norwegians were rather
independent and didn't pay much attention to the Swedish rule. Today
May 17, is a holiday with flags, parades and celebrations all over
the country.
