Calendar Information

The Cultural Center hosts a variety of programs open to  the entire community throughout the year. We have speakers, musicians, dancers, seminars, actors, and opportunities for sharing stories and artifacts from our immigrant parents, grandparents and forebears.

Upcoming Events and Regularly Occurring Events, as well as Past Events of the year, are listed below.

Normally, there is a cultural event held the first Friday of each month (except July and August) at Viking Hall.

Valhalla general planning meetings are usually held the second Monday of each month at 6:30 pm at Viking Hall with a potluck. These meetings are open to all and are the business and planning meetings for our programs.

Folk dance classes for all levels are held on the first and third Mondays of every month at 7:30pm at SCO, 222 Market Street, Santa Cruz, 95060.

Lucia Festival of Light at the First Congregational Church, 900 High Street, Santa Cruz 95060, 4 pm.  There will be a performance by the Zaida Singers, the procession of Lucia and her attendants and star boys, dancing around the Christmas tree, cookies and coffee, and a Scandinavian Butik.  We invite you to bring homemade cookies to the Church kitchen before the performance.  Thank you.

Cultural Program: Robin Woodman – The Lefse Lady, at Viking Hall, 6:30 pm Social Time, 7:00 pm Program.  Lefse is a traditional Scandinavian softbread made of potatoes, milk and flour, and cooked on a griddle.  Robin will teach us her secrets for making lefse like a pro.  Bring an apron and be prepared to have some fun, while you roll up your sleeves and have a "hands-on" experience.

Cultural Program: Dr. James Kaplan Presents an Introduction to Scandinavian Crime Fiction, at Viking Hall, 6:30 pm Social Time, 7:00 pm Program.  Scandinavian detective novels are enjoying a world-wide vogue right now and have had huge successes as books, on TV and in films.  Dr. Kaplan, professor emeritus at Minnesota State University Moorhead, will present an engrossing introduction to this exciting genre of contemporary literature.

 

To enhance your enjoyment of this presentation, you are encouraged to read the following selections prior to the program:  The Draining Lake by Iceland’s Arnaldur Indridason, The Redbreast by Norway’s Jo Nesbø, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Sweden’s Stieg Larsson.  Check the public library, Costco and Amazon.com for availability.

Trolleaften (Troll Night) at Viking Hall, social hour starts at 6:30 pm, program starts at 7:30 pm. 
Trolls live in the mystical region between imagination and reality.  They are supernatural members of Norse mythology with magical qualities – always a little bit mischievous and endowed with oversized nose and ears, and even a tail.  We will be creating our own trolls – with their own stories and songs.  We invite you to bring a costume piece (like an old wig, a troll’s tail, an old hat, a piece of old clothing, or a troll accessory – moss, stick, etc.) to dress a troll.  Contribute your ideas and creativity, or just sit back and watch as a troll emerges.  Families are welcome.  Dirt cake for dessert!

Rosemaling Workshop at Viking Hall, 9 am to 4 pm – Learn traditional Norwegian decorative brush painting and make beautiful Christmas ornaments.  Our instructor is Marley Wright-Smith.  The cost is $45 if postmarked before 10/18, or $50 after 10/18, with an additional $5 discount for Valhalla and SCCSC members.  To register make your check out to “SCCSC” or “Scandinavian Cultural Center of Santa Cruz” and mail it to:  Rosemaling, P.O. Jul Dinner at Viking Hall, social time starts at 6:30 pm, dinner at 7 pm
Entertainment will be provided by talented young vocalists singing Scandinavian Christmas music.  We will be celebrating our 20th anniversary as an organization and honoring Robert Peterson, the founder of the Scandinavian Cultural Center of Santa Cruz.

Lucia Festival of Light, 4 pm, at the First Congregational Church, 900 High St,

Santa Cruz, 95060.  There will be a performance by the Zaida Singers, the procession of Lucia and her attendants and star boys, cookies and coffee, Scandinavian Butik, and dancing around the Christmas tree.  We invite you to bring homemade cookies to the kitchen before the performance – Thank you!
